BOOK OF DAYS

SongoftheSpirit

Book of Days is a song about the lifespan of any human being. There are many obstacles to overcome and many problems to face. There are many ways to approach these problems, many ways to fail, and many ways to succeed. Because life is the core of any human, it is important to understand what we are doing. I believe that this song has many thoughts about the time we spend on this earth. With so much to do, it isn't a wonder we get stressed out everyday. Besides work, we also must set some time aside to enjoy the wonderful things in life. What good is a life which cannot be cherished? Your Book of Days is being written every moment. You are the author; what will the next chapter be about? Only you have the power to know.

Special Note: Originally, this song was released with only the Irish Gaelic lyrics (nonsense words were used instead of the English). It was rereleased with the new lyrics when the song was used in the movie Far and Away starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.

One day, one night, one moment
My dreams could be tomorrow
One step, one fall, one falter
East or west
Over earth or by ocean
One way to be my journey
This way could be my Book of Days

Ó lá go lá, mo thuras,
An bealach fada romham.
Ó oíche go hoích, mo thuras,
na scéalta na mbeidh a choích.

No day, no night, no moment
Can hold me back from trying
I'll fly, I'll fall, I'll falter
I'll find my day may be far and away
Far and Away

One day, one night, one moment
With a dream to be leaving
One step, one fall, one falter
And a new earth across a wide ocean
This way became my journey
This day ends together far and away

This day ends together far and away
Far and Away

One day, one night, one moment
This line describes the uncertain setting of this song. Since each measure of time is different, it signifies how the event spoken of within this song could happen anytime, anywhere.
My dreams could be tomorrow
Dreams follow along the line of the setting. Unless you have psychic capabilities of creating lucid dreams, you usually don't know what your dreams will bring to you each night. Notice how the word ‘could’ is used in this line. This means that tomorrow holds just as much uncertainty as dreams. Yes, it is possible to have our dreams come true, but there is also the probability that those dreams may hold only dissapointment. This metaphor correctly emphasizes how ‘tomorrow’ is never written in solid concrete.
One step, one fall, one falter
To everything we do, we must make that first ‘step’. Most of the time, the beginning is the hardest obstacle to overcome. We may ‘fall’ or ‘falter’, but we will see how our lives are just steps in its wholeness along a winding journey. We know not where we will step, but in the end, the amount we have done in our lives determines our worth.
East or west
Over earth or by ocean
This line is a recap of the setting. There are many different paths to take. Whether you believe in Fate or whether you believe in the writing of your own future, there are endless possibilities of what you can make of your life. But...
One way to be my journey
We are only given one chance in this short allowance of time we are given to live. When we leave this plane, our path can only be one. Never will we be able to make a u-turn halfway down our path and choose another. Our lives are one continuous line. Some may lead a winding road, full of adventure and uncertainty, while others’ roads are straightforward ones. Depending on your personality, your journey is what characterizes you as a person.
This way could be my Book of Days
With all that said, we can now know that the decisions we make determine our ‘Book of Days’. This ‘book’ is an atlas of our excursions in life. Important events mark out the highlights of our lives. Again, for those who don't believe in Fate, one can choose his own path. Because of this, you should be careful in the decisions you make throughout your life. Remember, this book doesn't come with an erasure or white-out, so be careful.
Translation
From day to day, my journey,
The long pilgrimage before me.
As you can see, even the Irish Gaelic supports the above interpretations. Everyday, we move down our road, whether it was a small movement or a giant leap. Everyday, we write our book. And everyday, we have tomorrow to worry about. The long pilgrimage mentioned in this part of the song is actually the long road that is always ahead of us. We may be old, but there is always something more to do that would satisfy our lives. With so many things we want to accomplish in such a short time, it is not wonder that our ‘pilgrimage’ seems to be super-elongated.
From night to night, my journey
The stories that will never be again
Again, even at night, a time of repose, we still live out a part of our lives. The second line is quite important. It means that what we have done in the past can never be rewritten again. We may look back and hope for a similar event in the future to edit, but what done and gone is done and gone.
No day, no night, no moment
Can hold me back from trying
Even though there are many things going against us in many situations, the strong at mind never stop to find new ways to overcome these obstacles. In every situation, there is always a chance of success. No matter how small, that success can be accomplished through creativity and such.
I'll fly, I'll fall, I'll falter
I'll find my day may be far and away
Far and Away
I've made it! I've flown over these mountains blocking my path! A wobbly flight, but with belief in myself, I can conquer. But this is only one peak out of many more to come. My Day is far off in the distance, away in the clouds.
One day, one night, one moment
With a dream to be leaving
This is the conclusion of the song. The setting is mentioned again. This time, the dream is to leave. This can be interpreted as moving on down the road. Since it is still a dream, it signifies uncertainty. Perhaps this is a major decision, or perhaps time is just taken to allow thoughts to pass.
One step, one fall, one falter
And a new earth across a wide ocean
All is the same, except for the fact that the term ‘new’ is used. This symbolizes another obstacle to overcome after the conquest of another. Our battles in life are continuous.
This way became my journey
This day ends together, far and away
This is the end of just another event in life. It has passed, and it is now archived in the ‘book’. As the day comes to a close, it will only be remembered as a time of long ago. With so many more days to come, it fades away in the distance with the setting sun.
This day ends together, far and away
Far and Away
Good-night!
Another adventure awaits you tomorrow.
